TITLE : INSTALLING MULTI-USER PARADOX ON PC-MOS/386
Multi-User Paradox has been successfully installed on a PC-
MOS/386, so that multiple partitions have access to shared files
with full table and record locking. The following is the process
to do this. The system seems to work fine for interactive
Paradox or simple scripts. However, attempting to run a complex
PAL application under PC-MOS crashes the system. Therefore, it
is not recommended to develop any ambitious applications under
PC-MOS until you have thoroughly tested it.
The key ingredients of success are:
1. Purchase as many copies of Paradox as the number of
simultaneous sessions you intend to have. You will
install only one copy, but you will need to supply Paradox
with all the serial numbers.
2. Set up a system of public and private directories and
Paradox.CFG files, as described in the Paradox Network
Administrator's Guide.
3. Run the NUPDATE program to set up the Paradox Network
environment.
4. Include the $NETBIOS.SYS driver in the PC-MOS Config.Sys
file. Paradox only supports multi-user systems that
conform to the MS-DOS NETBIOS convention, and PC-MOS
supports multi-user Paradox ONLY because of this NETBIOS
driver!
5. Always start Paradox from a private directory, and always
use the "-SHARE" option on the Paradox command line.
The following procedures allow one to successfully install
multi-user Paradox under PC-MOS. The purpose of the procedure is
to install PC-MOS to boot from a floppy, while leaving DOS on the
hard disk. The end result is a copy of Single-User Paradox on
the C: drive for use by DOS, and a Multi-User copy of Paradox on
the D: drive for use by PC-MOS. The procedure sets up users in
three PC-MOS tasks: Task 0 = "Chris", Task 1 = "Mark", Task 2 =
"Kathryn." Your configuration will probably be different.
Hopefully you will be able to adjust the steps below to match
your configuration requirements.

TITLE : INSTALLING MULTI-USER PARADOX ON PC-MOS/386
Before you start, you will need three copies of the Paradox
package. You will only be installing one of them, but you will
need the serial numbers from all three.
Version 1.02 of PC-MOS/386, Single-User edition, which lists for
$195.00, was used to test everything explained here.
Steps 1 through 14 can be conducted under either DOS or PC-MOS,
except for the MSYS command in step 12, which is a PC-MOS
command. Steps 15 and 16 are PC-MOS steps.
1. Create the following subdirectories on drive D:
D:\PARADOX
D:\PARADOX\PRIV0
D:\PARADOX\PRIV1
D:\PARADOX\PRIV2
D:\PDOXDATA
2. Install Paradox into D:\PARADOX either by copying from
C:\PARADOX or by installing from diskette using A:INSTALL
D:
3. Copy two files from the Paradox installation diskette into
D:\PARADOX: NUPDATE.EXE and ASCII.SOR.
4. Change directory to D:\PARADOX.
5. Run NUPDATE. Use it to add serial numbers to set the
total count to 3. For "Type of Network," answer "6
(other)" For "Directory for Paradox.Net," reply
"D:\PDOXDATA".
6. Run PARADOX CUSTOM. Perform these options to set up the
configuration for the first user:
a. Video/DisplayColor/DarkBlue
b. SetDirectory: D:\PDOXDATA
c. Network/SetPrivate: D:\PARADOX\PRIV0
d. Network/UserName: i.e. CHRIS

e. Do-it!
f. Select "Network" from the
"TwoFloppy/HardDisk/Network" menu
7. Run PARADOX CUSTOM twice more, for the two other users.
Choose a different Video/DisplayColor for each.
a. SetDirectory D:\PDOXDATA for everybody
b. NetWork/SetPrivate D:\PARADOX\PRIV1 for the second
user
c. D:\PARADOX\PRIV2 for the third
d. Network/UserName, assign a different name for each
user
e. Do-it!
f. Select "Network" from the
"TwoFloppy/HardDisk/Network" menu
8. Create a batch file, PDXSHARE.BAT, in D:\PARADOX, with one
line in it:
PARADOX -SHARE
When running under PC-MOS, use this batch file, or the "-
share" switch, whenever you start up Paradox.
9. Copy the contents of the two PC-MOS diskettes onto a
single high-density floppy. This will become the PC-MOS-
for-Paradox boot diskette. Use the PC-MOS command "MSYS
A:" to install the PC-MOS operating system onto the
diskette.
10. Leave the PC-MOS-for-Paradox boot diskette in the A: drive
for the next few steps.
11. Add three lines to the A:CONFIG.SYS file on the diskette:
SMPSIZE=99K
DEVICE=A:$NETBIOS.SYS TASKS=3
BUFFERS=10

12. Create three batch files on the diskette: AUTOEXEC.BAT,
AUTO1.BAT, AUTO2.BAT:
AUTOEXEC.BAT:
Prompt [0] $P$G
AddTask 500,1,,Auto1
AddTask 500,2,,Auto2
NetName MOS0
Path D:\Paradox
D:
CD \Paradox\Priv0
AUTO1.BAT:
Prompt [1] $P$G
NetName MOS1
Path D:\Paradox
D:
CD \Paradox\Priv1
AUTO2.BAT:
Prompt [2] $P$G
NetName MOS2
Path D:\Paradox
D:
CD \Paradox\Priv2
13. Reboot using the new PC-MOS-for-Paradox boot diskette.
14. To start Paradox, type in "PDXSHARE". You can use
<Alt><0>, <Alt><1>, and <Alt><2> to switch between tasks
and start Paradox in each task.
15. It is important that each user start Paradox only from
their preassigned directory:
User 0 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV0
User 1 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV1
User 2 must start from D:\PARADOX\PRIV2
16. Never start Paradox with simply the "PARADOX" command.
Always use the PDXSHARE.BAT file, or the "-SHARE" option.
